Organic Elements for the Artful Soul features the work of Cathryn Deal (photography), Amy Hines (metal), Ric Koressel (wood), and Holly Vaughn (jewelry).

Nature is Cathryn Deal’s connection to spirituality. With all the distractions in life, she can return to nature and become calm and still. Through photography she loves to capture those moments of awareness and share them.

Always inspired by nature, metal artist Amy Hines manipulates mild steel into sculptural forms to compliment both indoor and outdoor spaces. Each piece is sketched and then hand cut to be bent and welded, producing unexpected results with every effort.

Ric Koressel’s passion for working wood began with a table saw acquired while in college. From that time on he has gained skills and knowledge from books and hands-on experimentation. The vast number of wood species with their incredibly varied hues and grain patterns have allowed him a virtually unlimited palette. His boxes are assembled with only glue and precise joinery. In addition to being functional, they contain sculptural elements and a bit of whimsy.

Beaches provide some of nature’s best gifts. In this collection, jewelry artist Holly Vaughn takes inspiration from the subtle colors, rounded shapes, and smooth textures of beach pebbles she has personally collected. Framed in sterling silver and accented with gemstones, she has created a collection of wearable art that is organic in its roots and artful by design.

Reception : 5-8pm Friday September 21st, 2018. Gallery Night @ Blue Morning Gallery

Featured Artist:
Jan Kurtz- Jewelry and Painting

Jan Kurtz is captivated and inspired by things from nature and the sea. She served as a research scientist with the US EPA, studying environmental problems in the Gulf of Mexico and has carried that interest forward by painting intimate naturescapes and portraits of sea life. Jan also creates wearable works of art as jewelry. Her bracelets , necklaces , and earrings often depict animals and plants from the sea incorporating beautiful pearls and stones set in shining silver that reminds her of the waters that she loves.

Jean Tarnok likes celebrating nature and the beauty of all things created through her artwork. Conceptual works of psychological aspect of life also intrests her. She served as a Visual Information Specialist and Illustrator for the National Museum of Naval Aviation for many years, (where she retired from civil service) and currently works as a photographer for the Pyramid Organization, shooting musicals of developmentally challenged adults. Jean is particularly drawn to photographing wildlife and other fascinating aspects of nature.

Elaine Woodward. In recent years Elaine has painted representational art as seen in her landscapes, florals and animals. In the show “Expressions” Elaine is implementing a more abstract style- loosening up and exploring shape and color.

I think that one of my favorite crafts is jewelry making.  Beads should be part of any well-equipped jewelry making kit.  I love the choice of styles that jewelry making allows you to try.  The range of materials that you can use for jewelry making also means that their possible uses are limited only by my imagination.  Even though I was not a particularly experienced craftsperson I soon found that I enjoyed jewelry making and created wonderfully original jewelry.  Of course, I now wish that I was capable of far more intricate jewelry making but at least I am always improving on the ones I made before!
I enjoy jewelry making using a variety of different materials.  It is fun to look at what I have handy that I can convert into pretty jewelry.  One of my favorites is using strips of colored paper for paper mache jewelry.  My kids love tearing pictures out of glossy magazines and we try jewelry making together, well, almost!  They prefer to move straight to the decorating stage and I have found that dried macaroni makes an ideal bead.  The tubes of pasta have a ready made hole for threading and can be painted easily.  We also use clay quite a lot when jewelry making, probably because kids enjoy molding the shapes.  I have to take over the baking part but once
that is done they can decorate and varnish their creations and continue with their jewelry making.

Of course jewelry making is made more fun if you can give the jewelry to other people to wear.  I like creating necklaces and earrings to give as gifts.  People often appreciate handmade goods more than shop-bought ones, but more importantly I save a fortune with my crafty offerings!  My kids like making friendship bracelets for their mates and have recently got into using lettered jewelry to make up people’s names on necklaces.  A lot of kids wear them round here and also have become interested in jewelry making too!
I use a lot of different materials as a base for my jewelry making.  It would probably be impossible for me to remember all of them but I like using leather cord and jewelry metal the most.  I have tried almost anything that I could thread a bead onto probably!  Nowadays I do not have the time to dedicate to jewelry making that I once did, in fact I probably haven’t made anything for over a year due to our latest addition but when she is older I may well teach her the basics too.
