Manning, Lois

As an artist, I am inspired by nature around me. Pottery as a medium allows me to take unique foliage and make detailed and permanent imprints in clay. I am especially intrigued on how each leaf has its own unique pattern and how the clay captures it so precisely.

All my pottery pieces are handbuilt using stoneware, starting with a slab of clay. I use the leaves and different stamps to add texture before forming the slab into its final form. After bisque firing, each piece is stained, waxed and left unglazed on the leaves and carved handles while the rest of the piece is glazed.

The majority of my pottery pieces are utilitarian in use. I consider them functional art pieces because I believe the use of unique and beautiful art enriches our daily lives.

I have created art for 43 years and just pottery for 35 years. Originally from Miami, I pursued a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Florida International University and a Masters in Art Education from Florida State University to further my love for art. I taught pottery at the high school level and was involved in the local ceramic league. After moving with my family to Pensacola in 2003 I started entering art shows to display and sell my art work.
